When so many people are downsized, furloughed, and laid off, hiring seems like a low priority item. Like you, my wife and I know of dozens of people we interact with who are out of work, whose lives are more than disrupted – many are devastated. We are all looking for positive thoughts during the crisis.
Our clients have suffered through five major downturns since 1980 and their experiences offer two positive suggestions for you.
- Rev up your recruitment machine now, not after the rebound begins. It’s easier to hire A Players in a downturn because so many companies laid off not just C and B Players, but entire divisions, stores, or offices containing A Players, too. Today millions of high performers are out of work. Create a virtual bench of high performers so that when all companies are back hiring, you can hire A Players quick.
- Continue Topgrading During the Crisis. Hiring is way down, but you still want to hire only high performers, so now is not at time to cut corners (see our recent blog: Hiring High Performers is More Important in Down Times). Companies that Topgrade during recessions rebound faster and more successfully than competitors who don’t.
For example, MarineMax, one of the biggest boat dealer companies, Topgrades before, during, and after downturns. Here’s what Ray Bowman, SVP for Talent and Team Development, says:
“MarineMax continues to fully embrace Topgrading strategies. During any period of business challenge like a recession or coping with the impacts of a pandemic, it is always the A-Players that endure, press ahead, and ensure success for our company. Such periods of financial challenge also confirm the negative impact that a C-Player brings to the enterprise.”
If you’re not a Topgrader yet, call us (847-244-5544) or email us at email@example.com and we can get you set up to test drive Topgrading free on your next few hires. With terrific results, you’ll have Topgrading up and running when the big rebound happens.
